In writing Reluctant Pilgrim I wanted to tell the truth as I knew it, that the haunting and the searching for God so often feels like a game of hide and seek and sometimes it is difficult to tell who is doing the hiding or the seeking. I also wanted to share the tension that exists between passionately longing for glimpses of the holy while being passionately immersed in a fleshy, messy world full of proverbial bright lights and dark alleys.

Anyone who claims that the road to God is smooth and crisis-free is most likely on the wrong road. Faith and hope are not for the weak of heart. Yet, I believe that the journey is still worth it even if we find ourselves trudging along lonely and doubting at times, bored and smart-mouthed at times, exhausted and recalcitrant at times. Chances are, we will run into other reluctant pilgrims and somehow find strength and joy enough in that to continue

The Author Upclose

Enuma Okoro is a multicultural, world traveled, deeply insightful woman in her thirties who understands that the journey of faith is fraught with dips and turns through unlikely sanctuaries. She discovers God in art museums and on New York street corners, as well as in opulent Cathedrals and community gymnasiums.

“I have been writing since I could form those first shaky letters on the broken lines of childhood notebook paper. Words have always been able to capture some element of the spiritual for me. I cannot recall of what I was first aware in my life: language or the divine. But they have always seemed to go together for me and I have been haunted by both for decades.”
